English versus the English language

The (정관사, definite article)가 왜  English에는 붙지 읺고, the English language에는 붙는가?

English는 고유명사(proper name)이기 때문에 the가 안 붙는다. 반면. language는 셀 수 있는 명사(countable moun)이기에 부정관사(indefinite article)가 붙어야 한다. 그런대 English라는  특정언어(specific language)라 the가 붙는다. 여가서 English는 형용사이다. 모든 언어의 명칭은 영어로 이렇게 표기한다. 예컨대, Korean versus the Korean language, German versus the German language, etc.

People을 나타내는 방식도 이와 같다. 즉, Korean versus the Korean people. 어떤 나라의 국민의 전체를 나타낼 때와 개별을 나타낼 때가 대부분 같으나 다를 때가 있다. 한국민은 Koreans이고 개별한국인은 a Korean이다. 그러나 영국민은 the English or the English people이지만,  개별 영국인은 an Englishman, 복수의 영국인은 Englishmen이다.
